EUR/USD

trading forexThe potential for a December rate increase by the Fed continues to dominate trader sentiment. Comments from Janet Yellen, and data releases last week, combined to push the pair down to 107.00 from 1.100 earlier in the week. News on unemployment, hourly earnings and job creation also proved to be slightly better than expected, backing the case for a rate rise sooner rather than later.

A slower week in terms of data releases, and a US bank holiday, could lead to lower activity over this week, with the pair expected to remain reasonably steady.

GBP/USD

The positive economic news from the US, combined with UK data which left onlookers a little flat, meant the GBP/USD dipped to 1.5020 – a level not seen since April. Some analysts felt the Bank of England may be preparing for their own rise in interest rates, but the figures did not lend support to that view – and nor did the vote. Most members of the committee are unmoved, and a rate rise looks unlikely for now. Data releases on Wednesday may encourage support for the pound.

Gold

Robust data from the US again weighed heavily on Gold, with Friday seeing another drop, as traders feel confident enough to move away from the so-called safe havens. All eyes will be on the data coming out of China this week. While recent Chinese figures are being questioned among traders, any reaction to signs of a continued slow down are likely to be magnified.
